Young mothers is a very special project in my life for it is symbolic of many struggles of the African woman since many of our mothers and former school colleagues have been victims of this.Thousands of young girls in Africa still have no access to quality education as they are being barred from school due to early pregnancies. This to me feels like being sentenced to life imprisonment for a mistake commitment in innocence and yet I believe as a woman this shouldn’t be our mark nor identity for a lifetime.
Adolescent mothers are discouraged from continuing their education mostly by their relatives, teachers or policies put in place by African governments that make it hard for them to continue with schooling after becoming mothers because in many cases they are considered a bad influence to others. Many young mothers dawn to a new reality of rejection with a burden of bringing life to earth and nurturing the same which many times proves hardest based on the trauma experienced by this young girl turned mother.
There troubles begin while still carrying as in they lack the necessary help for proper feeding and care, and even when due they have no necessary hospital kits to facilitate the babies delivery making the whole process a life time psychological scar. This needs to end and its high time we banded together to help this very vulnerable group overcome their mistake because they are still potential candidates to great women of virtue even with such minor life short comings after a wrong life decision.
I have witnessed pregnant girls hiding from their parents due to these unwanted pregnancies, have witnessed girls loosing lives due to attempted abortions gone bad , have witnessed intentional suicide due to hopelessness of the victims, have witnessed community oppression of the victims, have witnessed school dropouts of once potential academic giants, I have witnessed unwanted/forced marriages, I have witnessed strangulation of innocent babies after delivery , I have witnessed abandonment of babies in hospital nurseries all because no one has paid attention and offered the much needed help. In many cases, this all happens to only the girl involved and the boys or men live their lives without any repercussions or shared responsibility.
Therefore our intervention is through helping abandoned young pregnant mothers with the necessary support and maternal care any woman would desire to receive and help them go through this hard time in life feeling loved and cared for. We have our contact with the medical facilities so we can help the young mothers who are struggling to safely get their babies delivered and also help offer them the much need counseling to overcome the evil thoughts that may germinate given a conducive brain environment.
We also help the young mothers continue their education through sponsorships, or help them undertake necessary vocational school to acquire much needed skill to make a living for her and the baby. Our future prospect is to set up a respite center that would help us offer a nursery and day care center for these particular babies whose parents are taking a second shot to life.
You can help make a difference in the lives of these young mothers through your support, involvement and advocacy
